Another School Year... Are You Ready?
A new homeschool year is coming... but are you ready in more ways than one? In this post, I share practical tips for getting your supplies, curriculum, and paperwork in order, plus the often-overlooked emotional prep that can make or break your year. Whether you’re perfectly organized or flying by the seat of your pants, you’ll find strategies to start strong and keep moving forward.
ENCOURAGEMENT & MINDSETPLANNING & ORGANIZATION

A new homeschool year is right around the corner... and with it comes that familiar mix of excitement, anticipation, and maybe a tiny bit of “What on earth have I gotten myself into?”
For some of us, the first day of school arrives like a perfectly wrapped gift. Supplies purchased. Curriculum chosen and neatly stacked. Lesson plans outlined. Paperwork turned in early. The coffee’s brewing, the kids are dressed, and we’re ready to roll before the calendar even hits August.
And then… there are years like this one for me.
This year is more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of year. I think I want to change our curriculum but haven’t made the final call yet. My prep work isn’t done. My setup is still in limbo. The paperwork? Let’s just say it’s on my radar, but we’re not there yet.
Physical Prep – The Tangible Checklist
When people think about “getting ready” for a homeschool year, they usually mean the physical part:
Do you have your curriculum ready, whether it’s books, PDFs, or an online program?
Have you stocked up on supplies like notebooks, pencils, printer ink,
and that one eraser that everyone will fight over?Is your annual paperwork complete and turned in if your state requires it?
Do you have a general schedule or rhythm in mind, even if it’s flexible?
This part is important - if you start the year without the basics in place, you’ll feel like you’re playing catch-up from day one.
Emotional & Mental Prep – The Overlooked Piece
But here’s the thing... physical prep is only half the battle. Your mindset matters just as much, if not more. Over my many years of homeschooling, I’ve had great school year beginnings and some not-so-great ones. And I’m not talking about the kids... I’m talking about me.
If I’m mentally scattered, stressed, or already doubting my choices, the whole household can feel it. On the flip side, if I start the year calm and confident (even if the lesson plans aren’t 100% ready), we have a smoother transition.
My Method for “Last-Minute Years”
Here’s the truth - I will get everything done by the deadlines. Why? Because I’ve been doing this a long time and I know my strengths.
I’m a task-oriented person. When a year like this happens, I grab my trusty notebook and:
Write down every single thing that needs to be done.
Add the due date for each.
Number them in priority order.
Work through the list, one task at a time.
No drama. No spiraling. Just check the box and move to the next.
It’s not a method that works for everyone, especially more creative, free-flowing types, but for me, it keeps the stress at bay.
Finding Your Rhythm
If my approach sounds exhausting to you, that’s okay! Maybe you’re someone who needs to set aside a few quiet hours with your coffee, think through your vision for the year, and then slowly build the plan. Or maybe you thrive on starting light and layering in structure as you go.
The point is, there’s no one right way to be “ready” - but there is a wrong way: ignoring the prep altogether and hoping it will magically happen.
Trust me, that’s a quick road to burnout.
A Few Extra Tips for a Strong Start
Do a mini mental reset: Even if you’re not “ready” in the practical sense, spend 10–15 minutes imagining the first week going well.
Your brain will thank you.Clear one space: Tidy just one teaching or learning area. A clear space makes you feel more in control.
Set expectations: Let your kids know the plan (or the plan-in-progress) so they feel included.
Remember, it’s not all-or-nothing: You can start slow and still have a great year.
At the end of the day, your homeschool year doesn’t hinge on having the perfect start. What matters most is that you show up, keep moving forward, and adapt as needed. Some years will be beautifully organized, others will be more of a “just keep swimming” situation. Both can work.
So… are you ready? Maybe not 100%. But ready enough to start? Absolutely.
